Keeping the wiki up to date[]

Currently, the wiki's main page is seriously out of date. I have fixed some of the problems, but more needs doing. In general, we should try to write the wiki in a way that minimizes the need for regular maintenance.

The main page contains a section "News" which includes the latest six user blog posts in Category:News. These may need to be weeded, possibly moved to a "Category:Historical news".

The gallery contains images related to Journeycon 2013. Those should be moved to pages that keep them reachable, for example some kind of "history" page.

The gallery also contains pre-DFC-release images. Those should also be moved to pages that keep them reachable, for example a "DFC development" section.

Instead the gallery might showcase:

  • every game at least once,
  • every DFC book at least once,
  • the latest released DFC chapter at least once (needs maintenance, I know :-).

The "Featured article" is "The Longest Journey Home", and says that that game "will be". Since currently there are no known plans for this game, this should be reworded.

The Help section duplicates some content from other help pages. We should consider moving that content to a section on a dedicated help page, possibly merging it into an exising Help page, and possibly transcluding that content into the main page. That way, when the dedicated help page is updated, the main page section automatically updates.

Other Ideas:

Near the top of the main page, show or hint at its content. For example, we might use the gallery to link to the sections. Or make the layout so easy to understand that a dedicated overview is not needed. Currently, I miss ... simplicity? I'm not a designer, but I do know that it does not feel easy to navigate.

The current headings are not linkable. Can this be changed? To be honest, I feel that the current heading style could use improvement, too. I have made a small fix in Template:HeadingB, but the heading style in general ... . Oh well, again, I am not a designer, please make suggestions or improvements.

The links in section "Content" look "picked on a whim", as there are many pages missing here that deserve a mention on the main page. Ideally, the "Categories" menu in the top navigation would be so good that this section is not necessary any more. I have worked on the menu, but welcome suggestions for it. In particular, I have picked the name "Categories" instead of "Content", because "Content" is just one category. What do you think?

I know it's not terribly helpful input, but I don't have any more to suggest other than to say that all of the changes you've made so far are great. Feel free to make the other changes you suggest, too. The wiki is around a decade old (we had another home before moving to Wikia), so there are a lot of choices that would be based on things that were most relevant in a pre-Dreamfall world. - Wandrew (talk) 21:53, January 7, 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your compliment and encouragement. I would love to hear more about this wiki's history. It's visible here and there that there was a predecessor, but I have not found an actual description. Is there one? --Lachnummer (talk) 09:26, January 8, 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, maybe we should have a page about the wiki with a bit of history. Would anyone actually be interested in that? I just found this old thread about the first wiki and then about when we moved over here to Wikia (I'll link them here to remind me). - Wandrew (talk) 23:18, January 8, 2016 (UTC)

Dreamfall series Wiki[]

A while back, trying to find a source for something, I noticed that there is another Wikia concerned with the TLJ universe, the Dreamfall series Wiki. Considering that it currently has less than 50 pages and that there are many paragraphs copied from here to there, it is a partial fork of the TLJwiki here. But it also has at least some original text. On her wall, I asked the founder why it was created. Does anyone here know the reasons? --Lachnummer (talk) 22:53, March 15, 2016 (UTC)

Hmm, no never seen that one. Maybe they didn't like the way we were doing things here... :) - Wandrew (talk) 06:03, March 20, 2016 (UTC)
